Walmart store closures: Three more stores added to list of shuttered stores in 2024

Walmart According to reports, it is the off-price retailer that announced the store closures.

I have two stores in California and one shop, which is closing as per Business Insider. According to a media outlet the retailer has closed three other stores, one in Ohio and two in California.

Walmart's closing announcement comes soon after. Dollar tree announced this week that it will close about 1,000 of its doors. Family Dollar stores this year.

Walmart execs say Walmart uses a process when determining store closings.

USA TODAY reached out to Walmart. Charles Crowson, senior director of global communications and corporate affairs at Walmart, did not confirm or deny the store closings. However, Crowson told USA TODAY what Walmart uses when determining which stores to close.

There are more than 5,000 Walmart stores in the U.S. and across the U.S markets. But some have not met financial targets.  While the core business is strong and performing so well. 

Walmart doesn't close stores randomly, rather, the store goes through several factors before closing the doors at any of its retail stores.

"These decisions were not light and have been made after a thorough review process. Decisions to proceed with closures are based on a number of factors, including historical and current financial performance, and are consistent with the range that guides our strategy to close underperforming locations."

According to a company press release, Dollar Tree announced that it will close approximately 1,000 of its Family Dollar stores in 2023 after the stores underperformed.

During the fourth quarter of 2023, Dollar Tree reviewed the performance of its stores to identify locations to close, relocate, or re-banner, the company said.

"As a result of this review, we plan to close approximately 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of fiscal 2024. Approximately 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores will be closed after several years at each store's existing locations at the end of the lease term, the company said in a press release.

A Dollar Tree spokeswoman told USA Today that the company "conducted a comprehensive review to identify and address underperforming stores and invested in improved store standards and development."

"Our review identified approximately 600 Family Dollar stores closing in the first half of 2024 and an additional approximately 370 Family Dollar stores closing during normal lease expirations over the next several years," Dollar Tree said.
